Comments about the web site: At a Rennaisance Faire once my girlfriend went into a pasture to go hug one of the cows. She discovered, much to her dismay, that "cows are not cuddly". I enjoyed most thoroughly your collection. I'm actually really impressed with Mark Texiera's entry... If you ever see him again, please let him know that it'd be really cool to see that particular style used on one of his projects.

Comments about the web site:

You know, I really hate cows.

They're always "moo mooing" here and "moo mooing" there and it just pisses me off. They also eat all my grass, perfectly good grass at that. I like grass, but whenever I go out, there are cows, everywhere. You'd think they could share a little.

I also hate it when they take too long in the shower and then they leave hair in the sink after shaving. Then, they have the audacity to ask me to bring the television out into the pasture so they can watch their cow-oriented programs.

They also short sheet my bed, and just laugh away for hours on end as I try into the late hours of the night to tuck myself in. I just go into the corner, curl into a ball, and cry, but that just makes them laugh even more.

Comments about the web site: Nice site, Marie. Had I known about them when we worked together a couple of years back I would have done a cow for you too. Sigh. True cow story: When I was very young and was dragged to farms (cousins', school trips, whatever) I was always disappointed at the paucity of white cows. I've seen hundreds of reddish-brown cows, but only a few white ones - and most of them were covered in black spots. This troubled me in the slack, abstract way innocuous things distantly hummed in the hindmost part of my childhood brain. Then, one day while shopping for groceries with my mother, I asked her where the mil she put in the cart came from. She gave me a funny look and said 'from cows, you know that.' 'I know milk comes from cows - where did this milk come from?' 'I don't know,' she said.'A dairy farm like your cousin's, I guess.' 'This milk couldn't come from cows like those, they're brown.' I received another funny look. 'This is white milk,' I explained. 'Brown cows give chocolate milk.' It's not really funny or cute, but, it's the only cow story I have. Let me know what you've been up to since you left marvel. It'd be nice to hear from you. Richard

Have them all around my house (of course 95% of them were given to me). Even when I said (to myself) "no more cows," they just keep coming. But I really don't mind, because they are so CUTE! Comments about the web site: I was reading the Washington Post as I usually do, and I decided to read the Surfing section (Perturbations, pleasures and predicaments on the I-way) which I usually don't. I saw this big black and white blob that was supposed to be a cow -- eating a hamburger no less (ewwww, cannabalism!) so, being a vegetarian, I decided to read on. When I got to the end of the first paragraph, I noticed the name Marie Javins. "Hmmmm," I said to myself under my breath. "I used to know someone named Marie Javins." I continued reading, and I saw that Marie Javins attended Antioch. "Well, well," I thought to myself. "The Marie Javins I knew was planning to go to Antioch." Then suddenly it hit me! "Holy Cow!" (no pun intended!) I yelled to my cat, who just looked at me as if I were an idiot and went back to sleep. How many could there possibly be? So I decided to go this bovine site, to see the cows and try to ascertain whether this Marie Javins could be the Marie Javins I used to know. I looked at the cows; I read the rantings, and suddenly I knew. This was just another Marie Javins who went to Antioch and wrote well, but she couldn't possibly be the Marie Javins who used to live in Old Town and went to see Arlo Guthrie at Wolftrap with me. Or could it? If you are or know of that Marie Javins, please tell her to contact me since we have about 15 years of catching up to do!

Comments about the web site: Hi, Good to see a nice website about overlanding. Of course Drago is not the best but equal top with Exodus and Encouter - all of which provide amazing trips. Overlaning by truck is the only way to really see the world! Mind you I am bias being an ex leader from Exodus. Nice web-site.

Comments about the web site: Marie, I really enjoyed the account of your trip. I've viewed a number of personal sites on the topic of travel through Central Asia, and I found yours by far the most enjoyable. I'm interested in someday (hopefully soon) taking such a trip. In fact, the route you chose might be the most interesting for me. You seem to think highly of the Dragoman experience. Would you recommend it? If you don't mind me asking, roughly how much do they charge for the package you went with. I visited their site and I was impressed, but I didn't notice any prices. Before I contact them, I wouldn't mind hearing your opinion about them and maybe about their prices. Did you compare their prices with competitors? If you could answer these questions, I'd appreciate it. Anyway, I enjoyed the account of your trip very much. All the best, Chris

Comments about the web site: Enjoyed your trip account so much I had to sneak reads during work. I don't know about your cow page, but the cows in India were enchanting. I've never even imagined a pink cow. It's refreshing, too, for a traveller to admit to occasional grumpiness. I'm a mom, so I thought I always had to be cheerful to hold everything together. All that perkiness probably drove my boys batty.

Comments about the web site: Greetings Marie, I stumbled across your site by accident and thoroughly enjoyed it.I did the Kathmandu to Islamabad leg of the Dragoman trip in'95; your writings certainly brought back a lot of memories. It was so interesting to hear about the trip chemistry that existed on your trip, as the same sort of thing happened on ours. Relations were good in the beginning and by the end things were getting very tense. Most people got along fine, but there were a few who bitched about anything and everything. Ultimately it brought down the whole morale on the truck.Other than that it was an experience of a life time. I was so down after the trip ended, I just wanted to keep travelling!. A year later I got married to a wonderful British girl who was on the same trip. It's a funny old world.Thanx for bringing back the memoroies. Mike Saunders, B.C., Canada.

Comments about the web site: Your travelogue was great fun to read! I read your whole trip... it was wonderful. It is such fun to read of other people's adventures. I went to Nepal & N. Pakistan for 2 months with a small group of people in 1998 and it was definitely life-changing. I was 17 at the time. Thank you for sharing your adventures! P.S. Aren't shawar kamizes (sp?) and the riding in rickshaws fun? :)

Comments about the web site: I thoroughly enjoyed your travel -log. I myself have experienced some part sof your journey. I was, however, saddened to hear of your discomfort / annoyance at this and that. It seemede like you complained of every discomfort possible. Loosen up lady. You ARE in another country and there to experience other cultures and food. All you did was complain about this and that. Jezze lady. I am suprised the others did not leave you earlier!~

Comments about the web site: I must say I have really enjoyed reading about your trip.I have had similar adventures myself and have often thought about writing about them but it's been a case of how do I go about it and who'd want to read it?The difference between my trips and yours is I travelled alone mostly.I had considered various trips similar to yours.I was working as an Au-Pair in Connecticut and most of the other girls chose the "Trek America" option. However, beside the expense(I've always travelled on a budget and these trips, although they're probably well worth it seem extortionate to me.)Plus, although like yourself I'm quite a sociable person, being in the company of the same people for any length of time usually irritates me to death and when I go off seeking a bit of solitude to "switch off" a lot of people can't understand it.I've been to syria a few times and it holds so much meaning to me. I can relate to quite a lot of what you got up to.I too have taken refuge from the intense heat@Sham Palace to eat the complimentary nuts and take the frilly little drinks mat home as a souvenir(I've still got it!)It's been great reading your account of it.Maybe I was reading a general account but my only gripe really was I was so into your trip, that I would have preferred more details about the sights and the culture than the exploits of your companions on the trip. But that's just me. From my experience of meeting fellow travellers, the majority of them just like to have their photos taken next to famous landmarks and could be anywhere in the world and be exactly the same. But like you mentioned at the beginning we can all be a little bit cynical about others from time to time.Anyway, as you can see Marie, reading about your trip has brought it all back to me and that's a good thing.Like you said at the end of your trip, you like to forget that you,ve gotta get back to reality and resume your 9-5 ball and chain job.Reading your story has done this for me so thanks for that Marie.I'd love to speak to you and/or read more about this and other stuff you've got up to!! Thanks again!I've enjoyed being with you on your trip from my little PC in Manchester, England.Bye for now........Gill.X.

Comments about the web site: I'm love, love, loving your travelogue. I spent a measly two weeks in Thailand a few years back and have been itching to go back and do it properly ever since... *sigh* Travelled independently then, but am really liking Intrepid Travel for part of the next go 'round. I need a world tour - we'll see.

Comments about the web site: hi.Just wanted to send a note of appreciation for a travel site well done (much unlike my own!). I'm on my way home after a year's traveling (solo) through Europe and India. If you're REALLY bored and want to see someone making an ass of themselves on a global scale (while still maintaining cultural decorum), let me know and I'll send you the link to my message board and pictures :) Cheers!

Comments about the web site: I read your entire trip. You truly amaze me. Consider me sheltered. Consider me a jam tart. I really don't know how you survived the trip. You have truly opened up my eyes to reality in that part of the world. It is now 3:45 A.M. here and I couldn't quite reading your story until you reached the end. There must be a bit of a let down when you come through that much with others and then they are suddenly gone. I have recommended your accounts to others. One thing, life back in the states should seem fairly easy after what you had been through. Yet, I know that you enjoy this sort of thing or you wouldn't be looking forward to your next adventure. Take care! Again, you are truly amazing. I would be happy to hear from you if you have time.

Comments about the web site: Dear Marie, I had a very engrossing night reading through your travels. I am from India and am at present studying at the Unversity of Bristol. I found your description of Indan Babus and the part about destiny drving everything in India extremely funny and I agree to a large extent with you. I guess you must have enjoyed India and the "colourful" lives that we Indians live. The part about your travels through middle east is facinating and I would like to do it some day.

Comments about the web site: Loved the cows. I've a whole room of cows, mainly Holstein though I like Guernsey and Angus too. Grew up around them in Western Pennsylvania (Meadville, south of Erie, north of Pittsburgh). I've collected comic books for over 25 years now, and have gotten tons of convention and commission sketches from comics pros (mainly Legion of Super-Heroes ones or naked ones) but never thought about crossing my two collections. Now I see I'm just going to have to do that. Thanks for the inspiration.

Comments about the web site: I am a guide and tourism specialist living and working in Central America since 1986, url of my bio is http://www.centralamericalanguagetours.com/who.html Certainly many things have changed since 1996 and now luxury first class buses with hostess a/c and video ply between major Central American cities starting in the Mexican border city of Tapachula with Trans-Galgos to Guatemala and Tica Bus to Guatemala and beyond through to Panama City. Also King Quality and Pullmantur from Guatemala to El Salvador with connections on to Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. In El salvador Trans Nica plys daily direct to Managua, next day onto San Jose. Here in El Salvador, if one can manage a bit of Spanish, local tour operators and the local internal government travel bureau "Salvadorian Institute of Tourism" or ISTU offer budget group excursions in a/c minivans with driver and guide, during weekends or vacation periods. Security and bilingual guides are provided by ISTU for foreign visitors on advance notice to one of several national parks they administrate, such as Cerro Verde above Izalco Volcano and Walter Deninger, a forest preserve hovering some 500 meters above the Pacific Coastal Plain. In Nicaragua you can catch up with dozens of local eco guides in Leon or Masaya...contact me for more detailed information. Donald T.
